Our Million Hearts Plant Care guide is what you need to grow your best plant! The Dischidia ‘Million Hearts’ plant, scientifically known as Dischidia ruscifolia, is a beautiful tropical plant that belongs to the Apocynaceae family. This plant is popular for its trailing habit and small, heart-shaped leaves, which give it the common name “Million Hearts.” Dischidia make great indoor plants and do well in a hanging pots in your home.

They are an epiphytic plant which means it grows on other plants but is not parasitic meaning it doesn’t take any nutrients from its host plant. What I love most about growing this Dischidia is that I can let it dry out and it will still look beautiful. Not many plants will allow you to do that without dropping leaves or drooping. Now let’s dive into the Million hearts plant care guide

Best Soil:

Dischidia Million Hearts, like many epiphytes, has specific soil requirements that differ from typical houseplants. They need a well draining soil mix that allows for water and air to flow through the plant’s roots like it would in nature.

DIY Soil Mix Options:

  1. Orchid bark mix: This is a classic choice for epiphytes like Dischidia. It provides good drainage, aeration, and minimal nutrients, mimicking their natural environment. You can find pre-mixed orchid bark at most plant stores.
  2. Coco coir: This naturally porous material offers excellent drainage and air circulation. Consider mixing it with perlite or charcoal for added drainage and structure.
  3. Aroid mix: Some well-draining aroid mixes with chunky components like perlite or orchid bark can work well too.
  4. DIY mix: You can create your own mix by combining equal parts of orchid bark, coco coir, and perlite. Adding a bit of charcoal for moisture control is also optional.

Things to Avoid:

Tips:

Remember, avoid heavy, moisture-retaining mixes and prioritize good drainage and aeration for happy and healthy growth.

Dischidia Million Hearts, like many epiphytes, has specific watering needs that differ from standard houseplants. Here’s how you can ensure you’re watering properly:

Golden Rule: Soak and Dry:

Remember, “soak and dry” is the mantra for watering your Dischidia. Give it a thorough soaking until water drains freely from the pot’s drainage holes, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again, avoiding constant moisture around the roots.

Tips for Watering:

Remember: It’s better to let your Dischidia dry out slightly between waterings than keep the soil constantly damp. Soggy soil can cause root rot which can harm or kill your plant. Erring on the side of less water is crucial to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing Dischidia Million Hearts Plant:

While Dischidia Million Hearts, also known as Dischidia ruscifolia, doesn’t need regular fertilization to thrive, a little boost during their active growing season can encourage fuller growth and vibrant foliage.

Here’s how to fertilize Dischidia

Less is More: Remember, these plants are slow-growing and sensitive to too much fertilizer. Over-fertilization can lead to burns, distorted growth, and even death. Use a light hand and always dilute the fertilizer more than recommended.

When to Fertilize:

Choosing the Right Fertilizer:

Application Methods:

Important Points:

Remember: Dischidia plants thrive on neglect when it comes to nutrients. Prioritize bright indirect light, well-draining soil, and proper watering. A light, infrequent fertilization during their active season is enough to give them a little extra boost while avoiding harm. You can also add organic matter to the top of the soil like worm castings. They will break down over time and gradually feed your plants so you don’t have to think about it.
