Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and cause damage if your plant is not acclimated to that intense of light. If you would like to have your Ficus in brighter stronger light then gradually move it to higher light. If your plant is kept in low lighting conditions you risk etiolation which means the plant grows leggy because it is searching for more light.

2. Watering: Proper watering is crucial for the well-being of your Rubber Tree. The key is to have a balance and avoid both overwatering and underwatering. Allow the top inch or two of the soil to dry out before watering again. Always check the moisture level by sticking your finger into the soil. When you water, ensure the excess water drains out of the pot to prevent root rot. During the winter months, reduce the watering as often as the plant enters a slower growth phase. Ficus’ are pretty forgiving when you forget to water. So don’t worry if you forget. Just give the plant a through watering.

3. Humidity: The Ficus Elastica is native to tropical regions, and appreciates higher humidity levels. In dry indoor environments, especially during the winter when heaters are running, the air can become too dry for the plant. You can increase humidity by placing a humidifier nearby. How to Grow the Philodendron Pink Princess Easy!

The once hard to find Pink Princess is a self heading philodendron native to Columbia and thanks to the big plant companies is now available all over! It’s know for its heart shaped leaves with pink variegation!

If you haven’t heard by now, the Philodendron Pink Princess is and has been one of the most sought after Philodendrons. It has been for a few years now. It was once extremely hard to buy for a reasonable price or find locally. Many houseplant enthusiast paying hundreds of dollars just to have a tiny cutting of this princess. Now a days the Princess can be found at your big box stores for less than $30 which makes her more accessible to the masses. So now that you’ve snagged this beauty it’s time to learn how to take care of her!

Philodendron Pink Princess | What pot to use?

The Pink Princess will grow well in any pot that has a drainage hole. All materials are fine from ceramic to wood just as long as your pot has a way for water to drain. When repotting your plant is ready to be repotted choose a pot that is at least two sizes bigger than the current pot to allow for more growth.

When and how much to water?

When watering your plant you will want to wait until the top two to three inches of soil have dried out. Then either water your plant in place with a drip tray underneath or take your plant to the sink and allow water to run through until it is coming out of the bottom of the drainage hole.

How often you water your plant will depend on how quickly the soil dries up. Philodendrons can handle a full soil dry out without dying which makes them great plants for beginners. However allowing a plant to fully dry out isn’t ideal and can be very stressful for your plants.

If you are a forgetful gardener then set an alarm to check on your plants once or twice a week.

What soil should I plant my Philodendron in?

When picking soil for the Philodendron Pink Princess I find that she does fine in a well draining soil. So here’s my personal mix:

2 Parts Potting mix ( I like ProMix )

1 Part Fine Orchid Bark

1 Part Perlite

1 Scoop Organic Granular ( Measure per package instructions)

This mix is what keeps my Pink Princess happy. Her roots don’t sit in water for a long time and there’s enough air flow for healthy growth.

Best Lighting for Philodendron?

Putting your Philodendron Pink Princess in the right light is key to good growth and variegation. The thought is the more light you give your plant the more variegation your plant will have. So with this theory your best bet is to put your plant in bright indirect light. This plant should not be placed in direct lighting. Direct light is very strong and can burn the leaves of your plant. They also grow very well under grow lights so if you are lacking light in your home grow lights might be the answer!

Trellis or Pole?

You can use either but you’ll eventually need one! This plant will get taller and heavier as it grows and if you don’t provide it with some support it can flop and break.

Climbing plants like the Pink Princess produce aerial roots that can attach to just about any surface so choose a climbing material that is easy for you to maintain but also beneficial to your plant

Propagation

Philos are pretty good about making offsets and/or baby plants all on it’s own. You can separate these baby plants from the parent and plant them into their own pots.

Depending on where you live you won’t likely get your plant to flower, get pollinated and produce seed so most people propagate by division or cuttings.

You can chop your plant to make cuttings and either put them in a moist substrate or water to which your plant will easily root.

Fertilizing

The Philodendron Pink Princess does well with an organic fertilizer. A good fertilizing schedule is the weekly weakly, which means you fertilize weekly with a very watered down dose of fertilizer. It’s a good way keep your plants fed and healthy all year round.

Humidity

Like many Philodendrons the Pink Princess is tolerant of regular house humidity. If you provide extra humidity your plant will be happier however your plant may grow just as well without the added moisture. What’s most important is keeping your plant properly watered.

Philodendron Pink Princess Tips and Tricks

If your plant is struggling and you are unsure of why here is my goto checklist:

Is there a pest issue? Pest can literally suck the life out of your plants so that is the first thing you should check for. To treat any pest issue you will need to do research and buy or make the right product for the right pest. Pest treatments if not followed correctly can actually harm and cause more stress to your plant and some may even be harmful to you or your pets if used incorrectly.

Has your plant been watered recently? Philodendron are pretty forgiving when it comes to not being watered regularly but If it has been too long your plant will wither and droop.

Is your plant Root Bound? Your plant is root bound when you pull it out of the pot and all you can see are roots wrapped in the shape of the pot. Plants can tolerate being root bound for a little bit but it does slow down growth and vigour. When your plant is root bound the soil that’s left dries up quickly so you’ll notice that your needed to water it more often. Before you repot your plant into fresh soil try to unravel the root ball to allow those roots to grow into the fresh soil.

Is there too little or too much light? Lack of light can cause stress to your plant and too much light can cause stress to your plant. If your unsure move your plant into different lighting situations to see where it’s happiest.

However, many people are hesitant to grow tropical plants indoors because they believe that they are difficult to care for. While it is true that some tropical plants can be demanding, there are many that will happily grow as an indoor plant like the Philodendron Burle Marx plant.

The Philodendron Burle Marx is a beautiful climbing philodendron named after Roberto Burle Marx who was a landscape architect from Brazil. He was well known for his modern landscape designs and there are more than 50 plants named after him. He was also an avid Philodendron collector which is so cool! The Philodendron Burle Marx is a very easy going tropical plant that everyone should have in their houseplant collection.

Philodendron Burle Marx Care

Lighting

The Burle Marx plant grows best in bright indirect sunlight. So place your plant within a few feet of a window. Some direct sunlight is ok but be careful of the intensity of the light. Meaning in the US an east facing window is going to have less intense direct sunlight while a west facing window will be stronger sunlight.

Sitting your plant in a west facing window with direct sun could cause leaf burn. If you need to put this plant in a west facing window be sure to use a sheer curtain to dilute some of the sun rays. If your home lacks light you can add grow lights. Grow lights can be so helpful on darker winter days or in that dark corner that needs a plant.

Soil

Philodendrons are tropical plants that thrive in a well-draining soil mix. An amazing soil mix for philodendrons especially the Burle Marx should be made up of equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. You can also add a small amount of compost to the mix to improve drainage and fertility.

Here is an easy recipe for a simple and effective Philodendron soil mix:

To make your philodendron soil mix, combine all of the ingredients in a large bowl or container. Mix the ingredients together well until they are evenly combined.

When potting your philodendron, be sure to use a pot with drainage holes. This will help to prevent the roots from sitting in excess water, which can lead to root rot. Fill the pot with the soil mix and then plant your philodendron in the center of the pot. Water the plant thoroughly and then place it in a bright, indirect light location.

You may need to repot your philodendron every 1-2 years, or when it outgrows its current pot. To repot, simply remove the plant from its current pot and place it in a new pot that is one size larger. Fill the new pot with fresh soil mix and water the plant thoroughly.

Water

It’s a good habit to check your plants weekly to see if they need water. Look at the soil, If it feels dry in top inch of soil, dig around to see if its dry two inches down. If it is, you can give it a full water where water comes out of the drainage hole in your pot. This Philodendron is also very forgiving should you forget to water or want to go longer between waterings.

During the winter months your plant may need less water depending on where you live in the world and what the environment is like inside your home. Our winters are cold and dry so I base my watering on how dry the soil is and how intense the light is for the plant. You’ll want to aim at keeping moist soil and not allowing the soil and roots to sit in water and become soggy or worse rotten.

Temperature and Humidity

I like to fertilize using the weekly weakly method which means I dilute my fertilizer way down and feed my plants every time I water with that diluted mixture. 

The Weakly- Weekly Fertilizing Schedule. If you want to fertilize all year round this might be the schedule for you. With every watering add a small amount of fertilizer ( less than recommended in the instructions) to the water which will dilute down the fertilizer. Doing this is weakly fertilizing on a weekly basis.

The Burle Marx isn’t picky as far as what fertilizers you use, so use what works best for you. 

The best fertilizers for the Philodendron Burle Marx are balanced fertilizers that contain equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). A good NPK ratio for Philodendron Burle Marx is 10-10-10. You can use a liquid fertilizer or a granular fertilizer.

Place your cutting in indirect sunlight and wait for roots to emerge and grow to about an inch long. At that point you can pot up your cutting into a well draining soil mix. You will start to see new growth on the plant after a few weeks to a month. The Burle Marx really is a low-maintenance plan

Propagate Philodendron Burle Marx by air layering:

Tools:

  •  A sharp knife or shears
  • Sphagnum moss
  • Plastic wrap
  • A rubber band or zip tie

How to Air Layer Propagate:

  1. Choose a healthy stem on your Philodendron Burle Marx plant that is at least 6 inches long and has at least two nodes.
  2. Make a clean cut about halfway through the stem, just below a node.
  3. Gently pry the cut end of the stem open slightly.
  4. Insert a small amount of sphagnum moss into the cut.
  5. Wrap the sphagnum moss with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band or zip tie.
  6. Water the sphagnum moss regularly to keep it moist.
  7. Roots should form within 4-6 weeks.
  8. Once the roots are at least 2 inches long, you can cut the stem below the roots and transplant the new plant into a pot with well-draining potting mix.

Tips for propagating Philodendron Burle Marx:

  • Use clean sharp knife or shears to make the cut. This will help to prevent the stem from being crushed.
  • Make the cut at a 45-degree angle. This will increase the surface area of the stem and help it to root more quickly.
  • Allow the cut end of the stem to callous over for a few minutes before planting it. This will help to prevent the stem from rotting.
  • Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Overwatering is the leading cause of death for cuttings.
  • Be patient. It may take several weeks for the cutting to root.

Once your Philodendron Burle Marx cutting has rooted, you can care for it like any other Philodendron Burle Marx plant. Water regularly, fertilize during the growing season, and provide bright, indirect light

How to Grow your Philodendron Burle Marx in your Garden

Winter houseplant care can be daunting. There’s no surprise that the winter months can be hard on our houseplants and us. Half of the time it is our fault and the other half it’s not our fault and there’s nothing we can do, but here are some great tips to help your plants survive winter inside your home.

Buy a Humidifier

The winter months can be brutally dry inside your home, especially if you have to heat your home. Turning the heat on can make the air very dry so adding in a humidifier will help keep the air moist for your tropical houseplants.

Add Extra Lighting

It’s no doubt that winter is dark. There’s less sunlight coming in which means less light for your houseplants to photosynthisize. Add in grow lights for your houseplants in darker areas. Not only will you brighten up your home, your houseplant will be so happy.

Cut back on fertilizing

Many people will tell you to stop fertilizing during winter. I still fertilize but a very diluted amount. My plants tend to still grow during winter and if they are still growing I’m still going to feed them.

Move your plants

If you notice your plants are unhappy then you’ve got to experiment. Moving your plants to different rooms/ windows can help your plant. During winter the light changes so rooms that worked during spring and summer may not work during winter.

Hot Tip! Keep plants away from freezing, drafty windows and heaters, vents and hot air.

Water based on need

There are a lot of opinions on watering plants during the winter. Many say you need to water less because your plants are dormant and don’t require as much water. I find that my plants grow all through winter and are often drying out faster because of the dryer air. I water based on need and not based on the season.

The darker days can bring on the winter blues that’s for sure. Bringing plants into your home can brighten your space and bring joy during the long winter months.
