4 Ways to Style Your Houseplants

Is there anything more gorgeous than a trailing houseplant? Or a plant that’s in the perfect spot that’s aesthetically pleasing but also great for the plant. Houseplants are especially gorgeous when they are full and lush. Styling your plants so that they are happy and eye-catching can be challenging to say the least, which is why I’ve got my four favorite ways to style plants that look great in every home.

Hang Them From the Ceiling

Hanging your plants from the ceiling is a beautiful way to style your trailing houseplants. Make sure when choosing a spot you pick on with ample light. Your plant will be happier if it is in the right lighting conditions. Here’s a link to the macrame plant hangers I love.

Mount Them on the Wall

There are many different ways to mount your plants onto a wall. I love mounting plants because it makes them more like living art works. To get a set of wall mounts pictured below click here.

Shelves

Styling plants on shelves is common way to style your houseplants. Everyone has at least one shelf in their home. If you choose to style your plants using a shelf, I want to encourage you to get creative. Add some pillars to raise a plant up higher. Mix and match with tall, short and trailing plants.

Plant Stands

There are some really cool plants stands that you can buy from the stores. You can also turn just about anything into a plant stand so get creative.

Styling your houseplants can be challenging. You have to factor in the light conditions of each plant and how that particular plant likes to grow whether it’s trailing or climbing or has a tidy shape. The best tip I can give you is to have fun and get creative.

There are so many ways to style your houseplants. The amazing thing about plants is that no matter where you place them they elevate the space. They offer visual interest all season long and if placed in the right light your plants will grow, thrive and provide beauty for years to come.

The 5 ways to style your houseplants are by utilizing shelves, plant stands, hanging planters, wall mounts and the floor.

Shelves

When styling your houseplants you will want to consider your plants light needs and the size of your plant. Just because a plant is considered a “low light” plant that doesn’t mean no light. All plants thrive in the proper lighting so be sure to do your research past what the plant tag says.

Look out for cool shelves at all the big retailers and even the goodwills. There’s so many options out there for wall shelves so get creative.

Plant Stands

Style your houseplants by putting them on plant stands. There are so many trendy or thrifty stands that you can find for your plants so get creative and do some shopping around.

Hanging

Macrame plant hangers are trendy especially if you are going for a boho, thrifty design. If you are planning to hang a plant from the ceiling be sure to anchor your hook into a stud or buy a hook that has other anchoring options. Nothing worse than your houseplant falling from the ceiling. Speaking from personal experience. Here are the Macrame hangers I’m currently using.

Keeping large plants on the floor is a must but it doesn’t have to be boring. Pick out a great pot and put it in a space that both you and your plant will love.

The most important part of styling your houseplants is to first be aware of your plants light needs. Once you understand what your plant needs the rest is fun!

5 tips to create a Biophilic Home

So what does it mean to create a Biophilic home? In my own words Biophilic home design means designing your space so that you and your family feel more connected with nature within your home. How you use natural elements within your home and how those elements make you feel more connected to nature. There are 5 elements to creating a Biophilic home and you can modify them to suit your lifestyle and needs.

Elements of a Biophilic Design

Fresh Air
Natural light
Natural Materials
Plants
Natural Colors

Fresh Air

Whenever possible open the windows in your home. Allow the fresh air to flow through and watch how it lifts your mood. It can get stuffy inside especially if you’ve kept the house closed up over winter so let the air in to uplift your spaces and boost your mood.

Natural Light

This is probably the most important tip when creating a Biophilic designed home. Light is the food for plant growth. Sunlight is well know as being a mood booster providing us with vitamin D. Open your curtains or blinds every day. Even in inclimate weather some light is better than no light in your home.

Natural Materials

Adding natural elements to your home is a great way to curate a Biophilic home. Materials such as stone, wood, plants or anything else that’s not man made will work well and provide a connection to the outside. If your able to add a water element to your home such as a fountain that would be wonderful. The sound of water can be very calming.

Plant Life

Houseplants are essential to the Biophilic home design. Houseplants are one the living aspects of this design style. Choose plants based on your ability to care for them. There are a wide range of plants that are easy care and an even bigger range of more difficult plants. Here is a list of easy care houseplants if you are new to houseplants.

Natural Colors

Use the colors that you’d see in nature. Colors like shades of brown, greens, blues and yellows are great when creating a Biophilic design in your home but don’t feel limited by these colors. Use any colors that bring you joy.

You can gradually add in Biophilic aspects to your home overtime creating a space that you love and connects you more to nature.

5 Plants perfect for your college dorm room

Hey Gardeners!

Are you heading off to college this fall and want to add life to your dorm room? What better way to do this than adding plants. I know a few great plants that are easy to take care of between busy college life. These all have the same basic care which is why I choose them. Water when the soil is dry and provide bright indirect light. Easy right?

1. Snake Plants

Snake plants and / or Sansevieria have recently been reclassified as Dracaena but that’s nothing to be concerned about lol. I water mine when they are fully dry and provide them with bright indirect light. They can however handle low light if needed but flourish under brighter conditions.

2. Pothos

This is such an easy to grow and quick rewarding plant. I’ve had them growing under some pretty harsh conditions and they survive. I would water this plant whenever the first inch of soil is dry and place it in bright indirect light. It can also handle lower light and less water but again It will flourish if you take proper care of it.

3. Zz Plant

This is such an easy going plant. I forget to water mine all the time and they don’t care. Get yourself a few of these and place them all around your room. I typically water mine once a month and provide it with lower light. I can handle low up to direct sun and still look amazing.

4. Cactus

I know a lot of people think Cactus’ are difficult but I think that’s because they water them too much. Watering too often is the killer of Cactus’. Don’t even consider watering your Cactus if the soil is still wet from the last watering. Each Cactus type is different but my rule is to not water unless its been longer than a month.

5. Hoya

Many experienced plant moms might say that this is a bad choice but I don’t agree. Hoya are so easy to care for in my opinion. I water mine when they are dry and I provide them with bright light. That’s it. Not much else to their care unless you want to dip into fertilizing but this is not that kind of post.

If you give your plants basic care they will survive and even thrive. When you are first starting out with plants I suggest starting small. You will kill a lot of plant before you get the hang of it and that’s ok. Have an awesome school year!

5 Big Plants to Fill Empty Corners

So you’ve got some big spaces to fill? Well, I’ve got a few big plants that will make excellent space fillers. Now you can buy these plants in smaller sizes and wait for them to grow big, but if you want impact now then you’ll need to get them in bigger sizes. I find big plants for the best prices at big-box stores. However, if you want to support a local greenhouse that you love, do that!

Monstera Deliciosa

I love plants with split leaves, and this lovely plant gets huge; as it ages, the leaves get more and more fenestrations.

Ficus Elastica / Rubber Tree

This tree can get huge indoors. You can buy one in a pretty big size at any big-box store or greenhouse, then with proper care that plant baby will get huge!

Bird of Paradise

This plant not only grows extremely tall, but it gets THICC. If you have a big empty corner let this plant make a statement!

Alocasia or Colocasia

Both of these are plants with the large “elephant ear” types of foliage. Colocasia foliage typically point down and Alocasia foliage typically points up. These plants can get huge and are gorgeous! They add a tropical feel to any space you add them. Definitely a good candidate to fill an empty space.

Palms

I love Palms. They are such a nice addition to any home. Like many tropical plants, they add such an exotic feel to any space. They can be kind of fussy and end up with brown tips, but once you figure this baby out, she will grow non-stop.

Plants add so much life to the home. These are just a few of many plants that fill up space and add natural beauty to your home. Which plant would you add to your home?
