There are so many gorgeous house plants everywhere these days. Foliage of all colors, plants of all shapes and sizes. So many plants to choose from but one question you should ask yourself before you bring home that 6 in pot of gorgeousness. Will this plant survive in my home? Here’s my list of plants on the do not buy list if your a new plant parent.

House Plants to avoid
Carnivorous House Plants
If you are not ready this genus of plants will die on you so fast! I’ve killed so many over the years I’ve lost track. Only recently have I been able to keep one alive. This is just an overview of what they need you will want dig into care tips for each variety you own. Here’s what you will need to provide to be successful : Full sun, Distilled or rain water, peat based soil mix, high humidity and warmth. If you cannot provide those things then run away from these plants. I know they are gorgeous but turn away!

Ficus Plants
Finicky Ficus is what I call them. These plants are sensitive to changes in light, temperature and water. They will defoliate if you mess with any of those things lol. That was a little harsh I suppose they may not drop all of their leaves in protest but they will def drop some. If you decide to go down the road of heartache my best advice is to find the perfect spot and never move this plant again. Don’t let them dry out and turn up the humidity if you are like me and turn on central heating in winter.

Succulent Plants
Just don’t. This is the one type of plant I see so many kill. It’s just too easy. They come in all shapes and sizes and are so beautiful but if you’re new to succulents don’t waste your money. They require a sharp draining soil and hate to sit in wet soil. They also need very bright direct light. You will know if your lighting isn’t strong enough because you will see your succulents stretch towards the light.

Calatheas
I shouldn’t even have to explain this one as it’s know in the plant community as a diva. Calathea come in so many beautiful foliage patterns and colors. It’s all a trick. If you don’t provide these beauties with high humidity and moist soil you will see her die so fast your head will spin. I’m not kidding! First you’ll see brown tips on the leaves. Then whole leaves will crisp up and before you know it whole sections of the plant are dead and your trying to nurse a teeny tiny piece back to health. Trust me you don’t want to ride that emotional roller coaster this early in your plant journey.

Fern Plants
Ferns seem to be the one type of plant more house plant parents can agree on its difficulty. Like Calathea Ferns are a high humidity high moisture loving plant. They are difficult for most people to keep happy. Even with experience you may still fail with them.

I wrote this post not to frighten you from these house plants but to caution you. They are gorgeous and lovely plants to have in your home but if you cannot mimic it’s natural environment then you will likely have a struggling plant before long.
