So you want to get on the houseplant train? Where do you even start? What plant should you bring home first? It can be overwhelming walking through the garden center and not knowing what to get. I’m here to help! I have a list of five easy to grow houseplants that anyone can grow in their homes.

Syngonium – This is a gorgeous easy to care for plant. It boosts arrow head shaped foliage and even begins to trail as it ages. To care for this plant you will want to put it in medium light. Direct light could burn the foliage. Water this beauty when the soil is dry a 1\2 inch to an inch down. You can easily test soil moisture by sticking your index finger into the soil. If it feels moist don’t water. If its dry water until it pours from the drainage hole.
Monstera Deliciosa– What a gorgeous plant! I have found the Monstera to be such an easy going forgiving plant. You can give it anywhere from low to medium bright light and it will thrive. It will give you such gorgeous foliage that your on pins and needles waiting for that new leaf to unfold.

Sansevieria \ Dracaena : Commonly called a mother in laws tongue this is a easy to care for plant. It is also very easy to kill. If you can master how to water this plant it will become a staple plant within your collection. To care for this plant you will want to refrain from overwatering. To do this you will want to wait until the soil is FULLY dry. Not mostly dry, not half way dry you want this baby to be bone dry. This is considered a low light plant BUT that doesn’t mean no light.
Every plant wants some form of light so that it can photosynthesize. Yes you can stick this in a dark low light corner but it will flourish in bright light. If you are a heavy handed waterer be sure to pot this plant into Terra Cotta. It will help wick moisture from the soil allowing the plant to dry out faster.
Golden Pothos: This plant can survive through anything! It seriously is the most tolerant plant I have in my collection. I have propagated it so many times and have neglected it more times than I am willing to admit. Low light or bright light this plant will be happy. Water when soil is dry half way down by using the finger test. Also in its mature form Pothos leaves will split similarly to a Monstera.
Cactus
Cactus: Now I know some wouldn’t agree with me on this but I think its perfect for first time plant owners. You hardly have to water it all depending on which variety you choose. How can that not be a great plant to own? All you need is a bright window that gets some or a lot of direct sun and your good!
No matter what plants you choose be sure to do your research and start small. You may not have a green thumb now but you will with time and effort!
